Travelling with young children… without the stress!

Tizzie Hall is an internationally renowned baby whisperer and bestselling author of Save Our Sleep. With experience and expertise working with babies, toddlers, and their parents for over 22 years, she gathered for us some precious tips to make sure you and your little ones make the most of their holidays!

💼 Before you go

Capture.JPG

1. Establish a good routine a couple of weeks before you go. Travelling with a baby or toddler is very different to travelling alone. The main difference is you will need to plan things well in advance. I have clearly observed over years of sleep consulting that children in a routine adapt faster and more easily to any new environment. This applies equally to children that are travelling across time zones or within their usual time zone.

2. BYO Sunscreen. Pack a sunscreen from home that you have tried on your baby or toddler. This way you know it will not react with their delicate skin and that the SPF works. It’s a good idea to bring two so you can leave one in your pool bag or at the Kid’s Club.

In The Air

Capture1.JPG

3. Plan your feeds strategically. As far as routines for babies go, I generally recommend giving your baby a milk feed two hours before the plane is due to take-off or land so they will be hungry enough to take breast or bottle on the plane (a sucking baby’s ears will also be more comfortable during take-offs and landings). For example, if you are booked on a 4pm flight, feed your baby at 2pm rather than the usual 3pm feed, so when you offer your baby milk after take-off at 4pm they will take it.

4. Always sit your toddler further away from the aisle than you. This is for two reasons. First, it avoids hot drinks or meals having to be passed over your toddler to you and ensures you can open the meals and only pass them on when the food is not too hot to burn them; second, if you have two children, it is much easier in an emergency to drag two children behind you than to push one and drag the other.

⛱️ When you get there

5. Learn the local time-zone. On the first morning, put your baby or toddler straight back onto their normal routine at local time if you have crossed time zones, regardless of how often or how early they woke the previous night or that morning.

6. Have them socialise. Holidays are a great place for little ones to learn some confidence when interacting with others. By taking advantage of Kids Clubs at Club Med, my kids have met other children from all over the world and participated in mentally-stimulating activities. They always leave with a happy face!

Club Med Celebrates 50 Years of Kids Club: A winning concept backed by a string of awards

50years-of-Kids-Club.jpg

Club Med is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its iconic Kids Club. That’s 50 years of offering children of all ages, holidays that allow them to explore and be creative in a fun, safe, informal atmosphere.

In that 50 years, Club Med Kids Clubs have set the standard for what a relaxing, inclusive family holiday should be. It’s not just about keeping the children amused so the adults can relax, Club Med Kids Clubs focus on fun, discovery and creativity so children also have a holiday to remember.

It is a winning formula. Club Med Resorts around the world were consistently voted in the top 10 family resorts by voters of the Readers’ Choice Awards 2017 held by Holidays With Kids, specialists in family travel.

One of the main reasons Club Med rates so highly with families is the wide variety of activities for children and the adaptation of activities for each age bracket – from 4 months to 17 years - so every member of the family is able to relax and enjoy a holiday while discovering new things about themselves, as well as the country they’re visiting.

Each child can learn new skills, uncover talents they did not know they had and share experiences with new friends as well as family. Children as young as 3 years old are encouraged to participate in activities such as golf and tennis, overcome fear with the flying trapeze or circus activities, and gain confidence in performing on stage for resort guests including professional (but fun!) rehearsal, lights,  costumes and make up.

Behind all the amazing services and activities at Kids Club are the highly trained and passionate G.Os (Gentil Organisateurs) who staff the resorts, and are why visitors return year after year.

“One of the most rewarding things is having families extend their stay because of the Kids Clubs – we have had three this season!” says Tamarra van der Zweep, an Australian Petit Club Manager at Club Med Phuket. Tamara has an Advanced Diploma in Child Care and Community Services, as well as over 11 years’ experience in child care.

Kids Club G.Os are focused on ensuring each child feels unique yet included and comfortable with a range of activities suitable for all personalities, big and small. Kids Club also provides a chance to meet kids from other countries, learn their language and culture with help from the G.Os, many of which speak multiple languages, including English.

Dario Latuary, Mini Club Manager at Club Med Bintan Island, says one of the reasons children love Kids Clubs is because each carer takes time to bond with the children when they arrive at the club. “That’s why there’s many repeat visitors and why they remember us, even when they grow up."

Being a Mini Club G.O and working with the kids is the most important job. And it’s not just a job it’s your life. My personal motto is: Live the life you love, and love the life you live. In this case, it’s my job.

As well as the different Kids’ Clubs, many Club Med resorts feature a kids’ only pool, and Mini Club kids also have the opportunity to eat early meals in a special section of the restaurant in most resorts.

Club Med resorts also offer babysitting services and evening Pyjama Club for children aged 2 to 10 years.

The different Club Med Kids Clubs are:

▪️ Baby Club Med: For children aged from 4 to 23 months. Baby Club Med focuses on senses and feelings, with engaging play areas and a staff ratio that ensures each baby receives special attention.

▪️ Petite Club Med: For children aged 2 to 3 years. Petite Club Med focuses on discovery and socialising with activities such as face painting, pyjama parties, and puppet shows.

▪️ Mini Club Med: For children aged 4 to 10. Mini Club Med focuses on energy and fun activities such as Club Med’s famous Circus School programme, arts and crafts and sports.

▪️ Club Med Passworld and Junior's Club Med: For older kids, aged 11 to 17. Club Med Passworld and Junior's Club Med are dedicated teen spaces offering everything from creative activities to movie and disco nights, as well as sports and technical arts.

Club Med announces its first Canada resort to open in Le Massif, Charlevoix Ski Region

Club-Med-Canada-Header.jpg

The renowned pioneer of all-inclusive resorts announced the much-anticipated return of its world-famous ski offering to North America through the creation of its first-ever Canadian resort.

November, 2017 – Club Med brings its unique all-inclusive mountain holiday offering to the heart of an already renowned ski region situated at the highest point in Eastern Canada, including a unique ski experience with spectacular waterfront views overlooking the Saint Laurence River. Club Med and Groupe Le Massif plan to open this new resort by the end of 2020.

Daniel Gauthier, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Groupe Le Massif, and Xavier Mufraggi, President and CEO, Club Med North America, have officially announced the opening of the first Club Med resort in Canada.

“It’s often said that you’ll only ever find a Club Med resort in the most beautiful places in the world. Charlevoix doesn’t need to have a Club Med to be included on this select list. That said, it is an honour and privilege to be amongst those creating worldwide awareness for this spectacular part of the country,” states Xavier Mufraggi. “Club Med is the world leader in all-inclusive mountain hotels and resorts. With more than 20 sites already established in France, Italy, Switzerland, Japan and China counting for more than 6000 rooms, we’re excited to add Canada (and specifically Quebec) to the list. Each season will reveal the wonders of this natural site, offering an international clientele a place of beauty to discover. Also, this project serves as a strategic symbol of rapid growth around the world for Club Med, with fifteen openings taking place through 2019, representing one to two mountain resorts openings per year.”

“The announcement is in direct alignment with the continued development of this significant project that will position Le Massif, Charlevoix, among one of the greatest international destinations,” comments Daniel Gauthier, the initiator of the project. “Club Med is a world-recognized symbol, promoting an active lifestyle, family and well-being. With shared values, the partnership between Club Med and Le Massif, Charlevoix, is one of authenticity.”

The project represents a $120 million investment with the objective of developing 300 rooms including 4-Trident Club and Deluxe-level rooms with a 5-Trident luxury space. The future resort promises to be a haven for family and couple getaways as well as ideal for groups, with spaces provided to accommodate seminars and events.

Investment and positive economic impact

While this recreational tourism project is born of a great vision, it is based on a solid economic outcome. Partners, including the governments of Quebec and Canada, Guy Laliberté and Lune Rouge, Investissement Québec, Pierre Thabet, Groupe Germain all have confirmed their investment, while Desjardins and the National Bank of Canada have established their support. The project also counts on Bell a long standing major sponsor of the Massif de Charlevoix.

Groupe Le Massif and Club Med aim to offer a four-season product that emphasizes Quebec’s strongest touristic features of the region from Quebec to Tadoussac. The announcement of these plans will also stimulate real estate development within the region and on the mountain.

This project forecasts the creation of 325 direct jobs and 400 indirect jobs. The construction of the hotel will generate near 700 jobs. The agreement with partners guarantees a mutually profitable endeavour for all.

This much-anticipated project will benefit several major players within the regions of Quebec and Charlevoix, including the Quebec airport, which forecasts a 6% increase in flights directly connected to this project. From day one Club Med plans to develop partnerships with a variety of local suppliers. The resort will be easily accessible; a mere 90 minutes from the International Airport of Quebec.

Interview: The Sporty Family Holiday Of Pip Edwards At Club Med Cancun

Untitled-2.jpg

In July, the P.E Nation Co-founder Pip Edwards (@pip_edwards1) ventured to Club Med Cancun with her family. We asked her some questions on how to have an active family trip to Cancun.

Note: All images below are courtesy of Pip Edwards, and have been shared with permission.

Why did you choose Club Med Cancun Yucatan for your holiday?

We spent time in LA either side of our week in Cancun so it was the perfect choice for a little downtime. It was very easy to get to and nothing beats the Caribbean blue waters of Cancun!

19534557_942529635903791_3569731934579851264_n.jpg

What are your must-haves when travelling to an adventure-meets-relaxation location like Club Med Cancun Yucatan?

👟 Make sure you pack your training gear and trainers as there are soooooo many activities to tick off!!

😎 Sunglasses...

👒 Cap...

☀️ Sunscreen...

👙 Swimsuits...

🏃‍ And activewear are all must haves for a holiday like this.

When is the best time to book international flights for a family holiday?

LUXE_J114_109-e1488858664142.jpg

When it comes time to plan an international family holiday, one of the most important questions after “where to go?” is “when to book?” With increased competition and low-cost carriers, airfares are getting cheaper and cheaper; however, when you’re booking flights for the entire tribe, it’s still important to snag the best deal possible. So when is the best time to book flights for an international family holiday? The short answer is sooner rather than later! While last minute deals could be tempting, tickets fluctuate in price so frequently that it’s a bit of a gamble – plus, school holidays sell out very quickly.

If you want to keep your eye out for your next holiday, we’ve put together a list of the most popular destinations from Australia, the best times to book, and airlines that offer deals frequently.

Best time to book flights to Bali

BALC_F115_052.jpg

Bali is Australia’s favourite holiday destination, and as a result, you can usually snatch up a great deal on flights to Denpasar. However, because the route is so popular, you’re best to book flights to Bali at least five months in advance for peak periods, as seats fill up quickly.

Full service airlines like Garuda have made a comeback in recent years, offering reasonable fares year-round as well as great baggage allowance and meals. However, the firm favourite is Jetstar – especially given the short flight time. To get the best deal, sign up to Jetstar’s email newsletters and book on a Friday, as their ‘Friday Fare Frenzy’ often includes great offers.

Best time to book flights to Phuket

PHUC_F207_038.jpg

Phuket is quickly becoming one of the hottest holiday destinations in Asia, and this demand is driving down prices as there are multiple flights departing daily. But, like Bali, you have to get in quick for a good deal, as often seats on sale are snatched up quickly leaving only the more expensive allocations – especially for travel in December and January.

If you’re looking for a full service airline, book with Singapore Airlines or Malaysia Airlines, which have great deals in the off-season and are great with families.

Best time to book flights to the Maldives

KANC_A115_025.jpg

There aren’t any direct flights available from Australia to the Maldives as of yet, however the connections are relatively easy and the total flight takes around 14 hours at its shortest. When booking the Maldives, often you’re best looking for flights with Singapore Airlines, Etihad or Cathay Pacific, as they can arrange connecting flights directly to Male.

Cathay Pacific have early bird airfares in August for flights heading to the Maldives in peak season (January to April). Similarly, Singapore Airlines and Etihad open early bird sales in September of every year – a great opportunity to grab a good deal on your flight.

Best time to book flights to Europe

If you’re travelling within school holidays to Europe, it’s recommended that you you’re your flights well in advance as prices can soar as your departure looms closer. Generally, flights can be booked just under one year prior to departure, and the sooner the better to Europe.

The best deals for Europe in summer often pop up from September through to November, for travel the following year. If you’re looking to hit the slopes for a European ski holiday, book a flight just before July for the best prices for the upcoming ski season.

Best time to book flights to the USA

The early bird catches the worm when flying to the US! According to research by Skyscanner.com.au, the best time to book your US adventure is 28 weeks in advance, which could save you almost $500 per ticket.

Qantas and Virgin are firm favourites for direct flights to the East Coast, offering reputable service for a good price.

Additional tips to help you book your family’s flights

We know it can be pretty overwhelming when looking for the best deal on flights, especially with the whole family in tow. Use these clever tips to make your life a little easier…

  • ✔️ Hopper’s Airfare Predictions App uses historical data to tell you when the best time is to book your flight. It’ll also notify you when your desired route is about to go up in price.

  • ✔️ Sites such as Skycanner, Kayak and Webjet allow you to compare flight costs and times to help you make the right call. They’re also great if you want to book multi-city trips or to combine airlines.

  • ✔️ Subscribe to the email list of all the major airlines if you’re gearing up for a holiday. They’ll send their best flights to you first – especially if you’re in their frequent flyer program!

  • ✔️ Search for the best deals on different IP addresses. Cookies stored in your computer allow airlines can track which routes you’re interested in and hike up the prices accordingly!

  • ✔️ Book package deals with hotels and accommodation to get a discounted airfare.

Into the wild - a Family Holiday to Malaysia

Untitled-1.jpg

This article on Club Med Cherating Beach, Malaysia first appeared in The Private Practice Magazine - by Steven Macarounas.

"To be a parent is to sacrifice! Yes, of course the rewards are worth it, BUT when it comes to family holidays all parents of young children must face the inevitable growth and development of their kids to a level that comes with strong opinions and their own set of needs and checklists that make for a fun and rewarding vacation. Having become a convert to the joys of the 5 Star luxury resort, I have feared for some time that our children’s experience was less satisfying than that of their parents.

Whilst their taste and style is highly sophisticated and refined (thanks primarily to the influence of their designer mother) they have begun to grumble about being bored and over the last few holidays have often pulled out the dreaded iPads for entertainment. Our son and daughter recently turned 11 and with advice of close friends with a similar dynamic echoing in my ears, we decided to build a holiday with their needs foremost in mind – we booked a week at Club Med Cherating Beach, Malaysia.

_DSC2310.jpg

Club Med comes with a certain reputation – it’s brand is universal, unequivocal: Family Fun in the Sun - Action, Noise, Sport, People, People, People! Not my idea of relaxing, rejuvenating down-time. But with an open mind and our kids smiles as the goal, we bit the bullet, made our travel arrangements and prepared ourselves to sacrifice seven days of our precious annual holiday budget – with gritted teeth we hoped they appreciated it.

WELL, we were wrong! Not about our kids appreciating our efforts or about them enjoying, in fact revelling, in this action-packed adventure – their smiles attested to the ‘blast’ they had. We were wrong about this holiday being a sacrifice, a compromise. Club Med gave us some of the finest family holiday memories and deeply rewarding experiences of our lives, both individually and collectively as a family.

It really was a life-changing holiday. Now, before you start questioning my sanity and accuse me of being easily impressed or overly dramatic, consider the following story and whether a similar experience for you might not elicit the same emotions and praise. The first ever Club Med in Asia, opening its doors in 1980, the Cheating Beach Resort is embraced by 85 hectares of rainforest, and caressed by a lazy, calm expanse of sea which, in the mornings, reflects the yawning sun and appears as a shimmering silver blanket rustling in the mild breeze over a bed of sandy beach.

Between the beach and accommodation complex (a labyrinthine network of bungalows on stilts) lays a spread of verdant, manicured lawn – soft and moist with dew underfoot as you stroll to your pre-breakfast dip. The location is idyllic, the accommodation (make sure to get one of the large beachfacing suites) is rustic but in keeping with the jungle treehouse vibe. The photos in this article will attest to the beauty of its location, the cornucopia of sports and activities available, the multinational, all-day offering of food and beverages all-inclusive in the daily accommodation rate, and the adult, zen spaces that allow for stylish, pampered, secluded repose.

What is almost impossible to convey in pictures, however, and also hard to do in writing, is the deep developmental impact that Club Med’s unique and well-crafted holiday experience had on our children, how it had an enduring effect in boosting their self-confidence, adding new layers to their personalities whilst providing moments of powerful connection between us all. Our children have never been ones for kids clubs and I don’t blame them nor do I want to offload them to kite making and puppet show baby-sitting.

At Club Med, however, our 11 year olds got to learn and experience trapeze ‘flying’, jungle mountain hiking, snorkelling, archery, hatchling turtle ocean release and even to conquer fears in the death defying Treetop Challenge – a maze of high wire and ziplines slicing through the trees and providing anxiety for overprotective dads like me and exhilaration for freshly minted daredevils. Some of these activities the kids did on their own, or should I say with their fellow resort gang members, and some with my wife and I – hitting a bullseye at the archery range had me claiming bragging rights for the rest of our stay. Some activities provided one-on-one bonding with our kids.

Although perhaps a little cliché, my wife and daughter spent three afternoons creating an exquisite batik bed spread, whilst my son and I sweated it out at our daily squash and table tennis tournaments – his skill at both improving dramatically to give me a real run for my money. We couldn’t shut them up every evening over dinner – the conversation overflowing and crisscrossing in the re-telling of fresh adventures amid squeals of excitement and anticipation of the next day. Wide-eyed, my wife and I marvelled at the growth in their self-confidence as they tentatively tackled and quickly mastered new challenges – not the least daunting of which (for our kids) was socialisation with others their age as well as the adult instructors at the resort.

Club Med provided some of the best fun our kids have ever had on holiday as well as delivering pleasantly surprising milestones in their journey to self-reliance and young adult actualisation. That’s not tosay that us fully fledged adults didn’t get what we needed also. Apart from the family fun, there was a seemingly endless offering of fine food and beverages, and indulgent opportunities for rejuvenation of body and soul in adult only retreats overlooking exceptional panoramic views of un-spoilt beaches and tropical jungle. Having exhausted ourselves from relaxing during the day, our nights routinely commenced with obligatory, heavenly spa treatments, followed by pre-dinner cocktails on the beach and a delectably maddening choice of cuisine from the four corners of the world.

Over and over I was reminded of the conversation that inspired the development of The Private Practice Education and Publishing program. It was with a retiring ENT Surgeon and we were examining regret and the characteristics of the truly successful doctor. This doctors’ greatest regret was that he had not had enough family holidays whilst his kids were still young and wanting to vacation with him. It’s the family holiday, he said, that most efficiently affords deep bonding experiences and lasting memories to be cherished throughout life. This was certainly the case for our family holiday at Club Med Cherating Beach and we all look forward to our next Club Med experience...maybe Mauritius this year."

Imagine this: you’re holidaying in an exotic destination with your entire extended family, having the time of your life.Sounds like a dream? Richard and Hilda Kingston, along with their children and grandchildren, show us how it’s done.

Club Med La Plantation D'Albion

Live private moments with your family on holiday

Club Med La Plantation D'Albion

When Richard and Hilda planned their multigenerational holiday to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary, they searched for a resort to suit all 10 members of the family, with ages ranging 13 months to 67 years! Their daughter, Emma, hit the nail on the head when she suggested Club Med Albion Villas in Mauritius.

“We wanted a mix of activities for the kids and a high level of accommodation with peaceful surroundings,” says Emma

When the family arrived at the Resort, they were immediately struck by the warm hospitality of our specialized staff (the G.Os) and the rich landscape of African forest and tropical rainforest. From the well-appointed villas to the lavish facilities and cuisine, the Resort exudes pure luxury.

“The villas were absolutely first-class with premium decor,” says Richard. “We’ve stayed in some top hotels around the world and this compared favourably to our previous experiences.”Emma soon discovered the villas perfectly catered for her baby Elliot, 13-month-old, with amenities including a washing machine, high chair and baby bath, and baby food.

A large choice of activities

Club Med Albion Villas

Each morning, the family would spend time together in their private villa pool, planning the day and sharing memories. Later, they would gather at the main pool.

“The pool area never seemed crowded,” said Richard. “There were activities for all ages and the beach area had lovely shade and soft sand, ideal for the children.”

Everyone made the most of canoes, sail boats and paddle boards, while the grandchildren, aged 13, 11 and 8 years-old, developed their circus skills on the flying trapeze under the watchful guidance of professional G.Os.

The exclusive offerings at Club Med Albion Villas allowed adult members of the family totruly unwind. Whether reading by the infinity Zen pool overlooking superb ocean views, or indulging in a spa treatment at Cinq Mondes, the realities of everyday life seemed far, far away.

“Our Villa Hosts did a superb job,” says Emma. “They were attentive and friendly, without being overbearing. They made us delicious breakfasts, delivered snacks whenever we asked, and even organised a private barbecue and a trip to the golf course.”

Enjoy perfect gourmet meals

Club Med La Plantation D'Albion

Finding meals to suit everyone can be one of the biggest issues when travelling with family members of varying ages. The diverse food stations at Club Med Albion Villas eliminated this challenge.

“The all-inclusive food was of a very high quality with plenty of variety and theme nights,” says Richard.“We loved watching the food being freshly prepared in front of us at the various food stations.”

The whole family feels that this special time in Mauritius will remain alive in their hearts forever.

“It is rare to find a place that caters for everyone and I will never forget spending time on the beach together, with the crystal blue waters and vast mountain ranges,” says Emma.

“It was the perfect way to spend our special 40th anniversary,” says Richard. “We will never forget it!”
